Jocelyn’s Colour Journal

Late summer and early autumn bring the colours yellow and gold to mind.

Make a list of yellow objects that you can see, or which the colour yellow suggests to you.

Here are a few suggestions to start you off: lemons, saffron, honey, gold, bile, a field of sunflowers . . . Next think of words which describe this colour precisely: yolk-coloured, xanthic, sulphurous . . . Now add your own words to this list.

Do the same under the heading of gold: lily, chrysanthemum, necklace, watch . . . Now find the precise word for different shades of gold: aurelian, or, old gold . . .  Now continue the list.

What associations do you have for the word 'yellow'? And the word 'gold'?

What would you say are 'yellow' nouns and verbs? What might be 'golden' nouns and verbs?

You can use these lists in the ideas for poetry and stories. Click on ideas for poetry, stories and dialogue for further suggestions.
