The Beginning of the End

This assignment concentrates exclusively on writing stories. Explore other voices to find your own. Consider powerful opening paragraphs and endings. Create convincing characters and find the confidence to let them take you on a journey. Submit a story or sample chapter of a novel for feedback.

Poetry Amalgam

Judge an imaginary competition, justifying your decisions. Offer suggestions for improving a draft poem. Create a villanelle, sonnet and sestina. Devise an original form and write in free verse (feedback includes a critique of the poems produced).

Emotion, Mood and Atmosphere

Discover how exploring emotions can inform the changing moods and atmosphere you may wish to create, making your writing more textured. Includes a warm-up exercise, six writing tasks covering poetry and prose and three ideas for your journal.

Tell Me a Story

Find out about allegory, myth, legend and archetypes. How important are these components in modern writing? The assignment includes three ideas for writing stories, a poem from an unusual angle and a suggestion for creating a personal mandala which may help you to manage time more effectively.

Inspiration

Renoir’s painting The Boating Party provides the stimulus for this assignment in which you write dialogue and prose and create an imaginary work of art which later appears in a story. The journal exercise explores the direction your writing subconsciously wants to take.
